HIS Travel Supports the Turkish and Japanese Archery Project as a Ticket Sponsor!

The Turkish and Japanese Archery Project, aiming to strengthen the friendship and cultural ties between Turkey and Japan, will host exciting events in both countries throughout 2024. As HIS Travel, we are proud to support this significant project as the ticket sponsor for its Istanbul leg!

About the Turkish and Japanese Archery Project

Turkey and Japan, located at opposite ends of Asia, have shared a strong and special bond for centuries despite geographical distance. This bond has been shaped by many historical events, from the establishment of formal relations during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II to the Ertuğrul Frigate tragedy in Japan and the aircraft crisis during the Iraq War, solidifying even in challenging times.

Today, this longstanding friendship is celebrated in the cultural sphere. The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Japan, prompting the initiation of the Turkish and Japanese Archery Project to commemorate this special occasion and introduce the traditional archery cultures of both countries!

Importance of the Project

The project aims to highlight the historical and cultural ties between Turkey and Japan, fostering mutual understanding and respect among the people of both nations. It also represents a significant step towards preserving archery traditions and passing them down to future generations.

Turkish and Japanese Archery Project: Tokyo

On March 23, 2024, an exciting event took place in Tokyo as part of the Turkish and Japanese Archery Project. Hosted at Waseda University, the event showcased Turkish and Japanese archery traditions through conferences, workshops, and competitions.

On the first day of the event, after a speech by the organizer Dr. Sumiyo Okumura, Mr. Kadir Barış Sağlam, the honored guest from the Turkish Embassy in Tokyo, delivered the opening speech. Following this, Associate Professor Makinori Matsuo (from Tsukuba University) provided insights into traditional Japanese archery. Dr. Iku Nagashima (from Tokyo University) gave a presentation on Turkish military history. Dr. Murat Özveri (an expert in Turkish archery and the founder of Tirendaz) then shared information about Turkish archery, comparing it with Japanese archery using examples. Efdaluddin Kılıç (from Marmara University) discussed the relationship between Turkish archery and calligraphy. Finally, Cem Dönmez (a founding member of Tirendaz) provided information about traditional Turkish bows and arrows produced using traditional methods. The seminar was attended by numerous students, academics, and individuals interested in archery from Waseda University, Tokyo University, Tokyo Foreign Studies University, International Budo University, and other institutions.

On March 24, a competition was held in collaboration with the Waseda University Archery Club. Turkish and Japanese archers had the opportunity to showcase their traditional archery skills and compete against each other. Detailed information about Turkish archery traditions was also provided to Japanese archers during the competition.

The event aimed to strengthen cultural ties between Turkey and Japan by highlighting similarities and differences in archery traditions, providing participants with an enjoyable experience and valuable knowledge.

Additionally, on April 28, a demonstration was held in collaboration with the Waseda University Archery (Kyudo) Club, where Turkish and Japanese archers showcased their traditional archery skills, further enhancing the cultural exchange between the two countries.

Turkish and Japanese Archery Project: Istanbul

The Istanbul leg of the project will take place at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul in the fall. As part of the event, seminars, workshops, and demonstrations will be organized for Turkish and Japanese archers to participate in. Additionally, a special exhibition will be organized for those who wish to learn about Turkish and Japanese traditional archery.
